Certified Sustainable Forestry FSC®

“The dedication and speed shown by Faber-Castell in implementing the jointly agreed targets relating to wood is impressive. It seems all the more appropriate that in 2011, the United Nations International Year of Forests, Faber-Castell should set such an excellent example.”
(Johannes Zahnen, Forest Policy / Corporate Partnership and forestry expert, WWF Germany).

The importance of the resource wood – not only for the company but also for the environment – has been long been of central importance to Count Wolfgang-Anton Graf von Faber-Castell. Faber-Castell’s company-owned forestry projects in Brazil and Colombia show the company’s commitment to sustainable forestry and help to secure an important resource at the same time.

In 1999, the Forest Stewardship Council® awarded Faber-Castell’s wood plantations the FSC®-Forest Management certificate for environmental, socially responsible and economically sustainable forest management. To ensure complete traceability from seedling to the packaged pencil, all Faber-Castell sawmills, production sites and sales organisations hold FSC®-Chain of Custody certification.

When Faber-Castell joined the WWF Global Forest & Trade Network in 2008, the company committed to increase the proportion of its FSC® certified wood resources from the current level of 82% to 90% by 2012. This goal was in fact surpassed in mid-2010, and 95% of all wood used by the Faber-Castell Group is now certified in line with the stringent requirements of the FSC. The remainder is also sourced from sustainable plantations, mostly certified to the respected PEFC standard. This is how Faber-Castell guarantees an environmentally sound, economically sustainable and socially responsible supply of wood.
